The destinies of two magnificent Brazilian biomes, the savannahs of the Cerrado and the wetlands of the Pantanal, are intimately linked. Actions that affect the Cerrado's environment have a direct impact on the Pantanal, with its delicately balanced system of water and wildlife. The Pantanal is an important sanctuary for many species, a refuge and breeding ground that may eventually help repopulate the widely degraded Cerrado. The important relationship between these two biomes is what led scientists and conservationists to implement a pioneering project: a Conservation Corridor.

Conservation corridors were conceived to ensure the survival of endemic species threatened by the fragmentation of ecosystems. When isolated in small patches of habitat, plants and animals can become very susceptible to changes in their environment, increasing the risks of extinction.

"Redesigning the Landscape," is a dynamic tool that explains the concept of conservation corridors by combining beautiful images of the Pantanal and the Cerrado, with interviews with key stakeholders in the corridor initiative. The documentary describes how all natural elements - parks, nature and private reserves, gallery forests, agricultural lands, cattle ranches, and reforestation areas - are important, and fit together like a puzzle, to build the corridor.

As Osmar Bastos, program host, says, "This initiative is really a project in which the whole society needs to be involved, each person designing his or her own piece."
